Essay Analyzing The Structure And Language Of The Declaration Of Independence Example For Students
Essay Analyzing The Structure And Language Of The Declaration Of Independence When, in the course of human language, it becomes necessary for people to create or redefine, words or phrases to express an object or an action; and to assume, among society, the acceptance and usage of these words and their definitions, in ones own language, or idiolect. A decent respect to the opinions of mankind, requires that Americans should recognize slang adopted into language. We hold these truths to be self-evident: that language is expression of thought, in the form of speech or written symbols, that have agreed-upon meanings. That, many large speaking languages contain dialects, or other versions of languages within a community, that are different in some aspects of grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary. That, because language is a form of ones own ideas and expression, everyone possesses his or her own individual language, or idiolect. That, not only does perception change language, but that language changes perception. That, through the course of history, idiolects have shaped dialects, which have shaped language, which in turn, have shaped concepts. Conservatives, indeed, will dictate that languages will follow a narrow path toward a standard language. And accordingly, expression will follow the rules and guidelines that limit thought, rather than the ability to rethink old vocabulary and enrich new ones. When we speak, write, learn, and think in a s lowly evolving vocabulary, which does not adapt to the more rapid introduction of cultures, concepts, fashion, and technology, we must add new meaning to conventional vocabulary.Such has been the language of Conservative American English speakers and writers, who have discouraged the use of creative language and the use of dialects and idiolects. Many individuals have not noticed that new vocabulary is, at many times, adopted into ones language. A large number of slang words and phrases have been considered standard in todays daily speech. To prove this, let us claim a few of the many slang terms that have been adopted. Slang has been used, where other words seemed unfit to describe a thought or feeling:Awesome.Radical.Cool.Far OutNew words that were created to describe new technology:A cellular or mobile telephone. The internet or the computer and modem accessed information highway. Electronic mail or computer generated mail. A beeper or an electronic paging device. Metaphors, similes, and creativeness also create slang:A coward is a chicken.Money is bread. A ride is a car. One thousand dollars is a grand.People eat grub.Smoking marijuana is the same thing as smoking weed or pot.A toilet is the John.A toilet is the can.A toilet is the hole. A Cop is policeman. A Pig is also a policeman. If something is bad it is really good. Those who are plastered are drunk. Those who are hammered are drunk. People who are driving too close behind another car are tailgating.Slang, also evolves in the form of phrases:A person Kicking Back, is relaxing. Cut to the chase or get to the point. Accept the consequences, or face the music. Two cents worth, or an opinion. The whole nine yards or everything. In the English language, we have petitioned for the use of slang in language. But our creative language has been considered meaningless to conservatives of standard English. Conservatives, who themselves use vocabulary that was at one time considered slang, are unfit to argue against it. Every language around the world adopts slang that, at one point, was considered nonstandard to the majority of the people. Slang is used to provide new shades of meaning. Slang is shared by introducing new concepts, just as new objects and ideas are shared. All vocabulary establishes its meaning through the acceptance of its concept into ones language. We must continue to express thoughts through ones choice of language, and accept them, as we would accept the importance of originality and creativity within individuals. .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be , .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .postImageUrl , .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be , .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:hover , .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:visited , .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:active { border:0!important; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:active , .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc1b2fe12f0637ba63ad817d95055e9be:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Geography of New Zealand EssayWe, therefore, the representatives of a linguistic society, do, in the Name, and by authority of speakers and writers of English, declare that slang refreshes language with new concepts, ideas, and interest; that slang allows language to evolve with society; that there are no determining factors in declaring a true language; and, that language contains vocabulary where its meanings are changed and new ones are introduced.

Jazz and Poetry free essay sample
There are many different types of music in the world, and each one Is deferent because of certain characteristics that help to make that genre stand apart from all the others. One of these genres Is Jazz. Jazz Is a type of music that was created mainly by black Americans during the early twentieth century, and is a combination of American and African tribal music. There are many different characteristics that set Jazz apart from every other kind of music, but there are three main distinctions; the first is its particular combination of rhythm, melody and harmony, second is the butte differences that make every Jazz player almost instantly recognizable and finally Is the way that Jazz players Interact and react with their surroundings, they do not simply play a designated set of notes. The flirt characteristic that helps to make Jazz so different from other genres of music is the rhythm, melody and harmony. We will write a custom essay sample on Jazz and Poetry or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Not only do these apply to the music of the Jazz era though, these same rhythms can be found in some of the poetry of that time. One of the poems that demonstrates a particular rhyme Is T. S. Elites The Love Song of J. Alfred Froufrou. In this Eliot does not stick to a common rhyme scheme Like some of the more simple poems. He does use end-rhyme, but It does not alternate for every line, sometimes there are two or three lines that have no rhyme between two lines that do. It is because of this unorthodox rhyme scheme that his poem relates to the seemingly random rhythms of Jazz music. Another poem that shows harmony similar to that of Jazz is The Tropics in New York by Claude McKay. In this he uses a simple end-rhyme scheme, and alternates with each line. But the way he has written the poem It seems to flow endlessly, not causing the mind to drift or to become confused. These are only two out of the thousands of poems that display the first characteristic of Jazz music. The next attribute of Jazz music is the subtle differences that musicians would put in that would make each player distinguishable from the next. One poet who demonstrated this quality greatly was Longs Hughes.Hughes was one of the most prolific and successful African-American poets of the 1 asss. In each one of his poems e would display his great pride for his heritage, as well as his displeasure with the oppression he witnessed. One of his poems that greatly illustrates this quality is Refugee in America. In this poem he speaks of sweet and wonderful words like Freedom, and how he thinks about it every day. He goes on to say that there are words like Liberty that nearly make him cry. This shows his great resentment of the oppression of his race.Another one of his poems that shows his strong pride for his heritage Is The Negro Speaks of Rivers. In this poem Hughes Illustrates how his race has been around for thousands of years and has known rivers all across the globe. By this he is stating that his race has been everywhere and will continue to last, just as the rivers of the world. But that is not the last trait that spans across both the music and literature of that era. The way that the musicians would flow almost randomly throughout the music, reacting to the audience, as well as their band mates, and not simply playing a single, designated set of notes. One of the first examples that comes to mind is William Carols Williams The Great Figure. This poem seems to make almost no sense, and have no reason for being written. It is the simple story of a fire truck going through the city on a rainy day. There were not too many styles of music, or literature, which produced poems as seemingly random, yet meaningful as the Jazz era. Another example of this is by the poet Hilled Doolittle, who is actually said to be the creator of the Images style of poetry. In Doolittle poem Heat she speaks of a wind that is miming through to cool down the heat.

How Systematic Random Sampling Work
How Systematic Random Sampling Work Systematic sampling is a technique for creating a random probability sample in which each piece of data is chosen at a fixed interval for inclusion in the sample. For example, if a researcher wanted to create a systematic sample of 1,000 students at a university with an enrolled population of 10,000, he or she would choose every tenth person from a list of all students. How to Create a Systematic Sample Creating a systematic sample is rather easy. The researcher must first decide how many people out of the total population to include in the sample, keeping in mind that the larger the sample size, the more accurate, valid, and applicable the results will be. Then, the researcher will decide what the interval for sampling is, which will be the standard distance between each sampled element. This should be decided by dividing the total population by the desired sample size. In the example given above, the sampling interval is 10 because it is the result of dividing 10,000 (the total population) by 1,000 (the desired sample size). Finally, the researcher chooses an element from the list that falls below the interval, which in this case would be one of the first 10 elements within the sample, and then proceeds to select every tenth element. Advantages of Systematic Sampling Researchers like systematic sampling because it is a simple and easy technique that produces a random sample that is free from bias. It can happen that, with simple random sampling, the sample population may have clusters of elements that create bias. Systematic sampling eliminates this possibility because it ensures that each sampled element is a fixed distance apart from those that surround it. Disadvantages of Systematic Sampling When creating a systematic sample, the researcher must take care to ensure that the interval of selection does not create bias by selecting elements that share a trait. For example, it could be possible that every tenth person in a racially diverse population could be Hispanic. In such a case, the systematic sample would be biased because it would be composed of mostly (or all) Hispanic people, rather than reflecting the racial diversity of the total population. Applying Systematic Sampling Say you want to create a systematic random sample of 1,000 people from a population of 10,000. Using a list of the total population, number each person from 1 to 10,000. Then, randomly choose a number, like 4, as the number to start with. This means that the person numbered 4 would be your first selection, and then every tenth person from then on would be included in your sample. Your sample, then, would be composed of persons numbered 14, 24, 34, 44, 54, and so on down the line until you reach the person numbered 9,994. Updated by Nicki Lisa Cole, Ph.D.

War on Drugs Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
War on Drugs - Coursework Example The major unintended consequences of the war on drugs include the criminalization of drug users, death penalty; punitive sentencing practices such as mandatory sentencing; excessive levels of imprisonment and the enforced drug detention centers. The drug policy directly affected the poor, vulnerable and the socially excluded groups, particularly the women and ethnic minorities. Generally, a larger percentage of the small scale drug offenders exhibit no history of criminal acts such as high level drug selling activities or violence. However, illegal drug perpetrators make up a large percentage of arrests; in the US, marijuana made up 40% of total drug arrest in 2005 (Penal Reform International, 2010). The US has been largely criticized for racially molding the War on Drugs. Even though the rate of marijuana use is evenly spread across the population, the Native American users seem to be favored by the law with Blacks and Latinos disfavored in the process. For instance, among the inmates incarcerated in prisons for drug related offences, 37% were Blacks, 31% Hispanics and only 28% were Whites in 2007 (Pew Research Center, 2009). In conclusion, the War on Drug initiative has proven ineffective in controlling the production, trafficking and consumption of the illegal drugs. It is also associated with numerous other impacts such as criminal justice system overload, overwhelmed courts, and overcrowded prisons exacerbated health problems. This, therefore, would suggest the need for trial of alternative measures such as legalization of drug use. Penal Reform International.(2010). Eugenics the Unethical Pseudoscience Essay Example for Free
Eugenics the Unethical Pseudoscience Essay Our topic was on selective human breeding, or in other words eugenics. If you donââ¬â¢t know what eugenics is donââ¬â¢t worry Iââ¬â¢ll tell you, according to Oxford dictionaries eugenics is the science of improving a population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. Desirable heritable characteristics for example can be things like a particular eye color, hair color, height, etc. My question to you all is if you think eugenics is ethical or not? I want to hear your answer after I give you my reasons of why I donââ¬â¢t believe eugenics is ethical. Now this might not sound like such a controversial topic but the history of eugenics is not exactly a bright one. Now everyone knows how WWII began, and the people responsible for it. Hitler and his henchmen victimized an entire continent, murdered millions, during his search for what he called the ââ¬Å"Master Race. â⬠His vision of the ideal race was white, blonde-haired, and blue-eyed, but contrary to popular belief, this idea of the ââ¬Å"Master Raceâ⬠did not originate with Hitler. The idea came from the United States and its eugenics program. The E. R.à O also known as the Eugenics Record Office was founded on 1910 in New York. A thing that not many people know is that the United States actually had one of the largest eugenic movements in the world. Eugenics was used by scientists as a way to control people, by that I mean they would use various research methods, hereditary questionnaires, and interviewing groups with special interests. The E. R. O. was able to convince the U. S. government to administer eugenic laws nationwide. This included immigration and marriage restrictions, race segregation, and forced sterilization of criminals and who was seen as undesirable. Well what is forced sterilization you ask? To simplify it for males itââ¬â¢s a vasectomy and for woman itââ¬â¢s a tubal ligation, getting your tubes tied. The U. S. was forcing people to be sterilized just because they were seen as unfit to breed, because they didnââ¬â¢t fall under what was seen as desirable. Now this thing eugenics they called it science, I personally see it as pseudoscience used to discriminate people, was used for decades. Oh and did you know that California had the largest eugenics movement in the country. From 1907 to the 1970ââ¬â¢s over 60,000 people were forced sterilized in the U. S. alone, and 20,000 of those people were in California. Now who decides if a person should be forced sterilized or not, well a list was made and if a person has or falls under any of the items on that list, they are to be sterilized right away. The few things on that list are paralysis, congenital blindness, acquired deafness, sexual promiscuity, and not being physically attractive. Now I have a video Iââ¬â¢d like to show you about eugenics and its forced sterilization.
